About Bunk-a-Biker

Bunk-a-Biker is a worldwide community of motorcycle riders who voluntarily provide accommodations to traveling bikers. It's a network that is designed to be utilized along the road for meeting new friends, making road family, and getting support for maintenance needs. While it is a privilege to use, it's not rightfully designed to be used purely for the sake of saving money, but instead to promote the togetherness and support of a motorcycle-enthusiast community. Bunk-a-Biker is built on respect and we will uphold that expectation amongst all members.

It is self-moderated with assistance from the admins.

Accountability sits with each person in the network. We provide no promises of safety or security. What we do is set expectations clearly, give people the information they need to make their own judgements, and step in when something goes wrong.

How much does it cost to use Bunk-a-Biker?

Bunk-a-Biker is free and always will be. Bunk-a-Biker's rules are that there should be no monetary exchange between hosts and guests so that we can promote friendships developing amongst the members. If you want to do something for your hosts, gifts of local souvenirs, a 6 pack of beer, a bottle of wine, dinner, notes, thank you/Christmas cards, and other thoughtful gifts are usually appreciated.

How does Bunk-a-Biker run without charging the members?

BaB is supported through premium memberships, donations via the website donate buttons/Patreon/BuymeaCoffee, paid sponsor ads, affiliate links, and merch. We do everything we can to earn money on a volunteer basis so that the members will never have to pay for access.

A brief-ish history

While you likely know about Bunk-a-Biker today because of Zee Traveler's re-organization of the community and tireless marketing on social media that started in 2019, she actually requested to take it over from Kjetil Lystad of Norway while having down time from a motorcycle wreck that year. Back in 2015, Kjetil was inspired by CouchSurfing and came up with "Bunk-a-Biker" to be able to name what he had been doing for years by word-of-mouth; hosting traveling motorcycle riders. Soon after the name was conceived, multiple Facebook groups popped up when other riders offered to help, but shortly after that, the momentum slowed down. By 2019, Bunk-a-Biker had no one actively managing it, no map, no website, and no system in place to help riders connect.

Zee brought over her skills, reputation, and experience from her first community, Minimalist Motorcycle Vagabonds, to build Bunk-a-Biker into the active, healthy, and supportive community she knew it could be. She is a full time motorcycle traveler herself and knew that a resource like Bunk-a-Biker could not only help travelers around the world, but change people's lives too. Nothing compares to the experience of being welcomed into someone's home and family after a long day of traveling through foreign lands and she believes everyone deserves a chance to experience that.

It was many years that Zee managed the map, website, marketing, conflict management, etc with help from volunteers, but in 2026 Tom Blizzard offered to build a web-based program for Bunk-a-Biker to use. Tom is an avid rider himself and traveling wouldn't be affordable for him without the amazing hosts who have offered to let him stay with them. And so he built the brilliant website you see right now just so Bunk-a-Biker would be easier to use for everyone.
